4 Boards & 5 Books
Project brief: Compose a three-dimensional wooden form that demonstrates the hierarchical arrangement of planar surfaces, combined at right angles, in a visually balanced composition. Consider inherent material qualities while developing a visually interesting object that addresses issues of form, structure, and function.
Using a single plank of 1” thick, 8” wide, and 96” long (nominal dimensions) “clear pine” lumber, design an assemblage of five hardback books whose combined thickness is a minimum of 8-inches. Fabricate and combine no more or less than four (4) contiguous planar elements. All cuts and joinery must be at 90-degree angles. The assembly must be made stable and self-supporting without the use of mechanical fasteners or adhesives.
Successful compositions will consider both wood and book as compositional elements arranged in harmony.
